Beautiful Creatures

Mrs. Benning LOVED this book - and not just because it has a really cool librarian in it. Vivid characters, plot twists, and a creepy setting. Watch the movie trailer (left), read the book, then see the movie when it comes to theaters in February, 2013. As cool as the movie looks, I'll bet it's not better than the book!

The Fault in our Stars
Hazel, 16, has been battling thyroid cancer since age 13, and only through the use of an experimental drug is she still alive. She carries an oxygen tank with her everywhere, and hasn't attended traditional school since her diagnosis. Depressed and lonely, she tries a support group, where she meets the handsome — and deceptively sick — Augustus Waters, a 17-year-old dreamboat who quickly proceeds to turn her life into an adventure. Green graciously avoids the typical will-they-or-won't-they of most teen reads, as cancer victims don't have the luxury of time to dawdle with their affections. Instead, Augustus and Hazel become fast friends.
Green's novel is elegantly plotted, and as sad in places as one might expect a book about adolescent cancer to be. But it's also brimming with joy. Hazel and Augustus have a zeal for living and for each other that, cancer or not, is rare, and it's a delight to see their plans unfold and relationship flourish even as they both face death. Green has a powerful online following: He is a YouTube video star with an army of fans he calls the "nerdfighters," a group mobilized "to fight to increase awesome and decrease suck." His draw is so magnetic that just by asking his devotees to donate money, he raised over $100,000 for charity. When he offered signed copies of Fault in a pre-sale last year, the novel leapt to the top of Amazon's list of best-selling books in a single day, and it has remained in the top 20 since. The Fault in Our Stars proves that the hype surrounding Green is not overblown. |

Check out this cool fan-made book trailer for Divergent!
Should you read Divergent? YES, YES, and YES!!! You will love it. I. promise. "Divergent" by Veronica RothIn this edgy debut (definitely not for the fainthearted), first in a trilogy, promising author Roth tells the riveting and complex story of a teenage girl forced to choose, at age 16, between her routinized, selfless family and the adventurous, unrestrained future she longs for. Beatrice "Tris" Prior lives in crumbling dystopian Chicago, where citizens are divided into five factions—Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite—depending on their beliefs, passions, and loyalties. When Tris forsakes her Abnegation family to become one of the wild, fearless Dauntless, she must confront her deepest fears, learn to trust her fellow initiates, and guard the ominous secret that she is actually a Divergent, with the strengths of multiple factions, and is therefore a target of dangerously controlling leaders. Roth's descriptions of Tris's initiation process are as spellbinding as they are violent, while the tremulous romance between Tris and her protective and demanding instructor, Four, unfurls with heart-stopping tenderness. For those who loved The Hunger Games and are willing to brave the sometimes sadistic tests of strength and courage Tris must endure, the reward is a memorable, unpredictable journey from which it is nearly impossible to turn away.

"Hush, Hush" Better than Twilight? That's a definite YES.
"As an obsessive Twilight fan, I found that completely hard to say. Hush Hush is very suspenseful! It kept me on my toes the whole entire novel, wondering what would happen next. Right when you think one thing is going to happen, the unexpected does. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who read the Twilight Saga and loved it. You'll be wondering this whole book, and there'll be a nagging voice because of the suspense. Guaranteed. You're in for a ride!"

"The Maze Runner" by James DashnerImagine waking up one day in total darkness, unsure of where you are and unable to remember anything about yourself except your first name. You're in a bizarre place devoid of adults called the Glade. The Glade is an enclosed structure with a jail, a graveyard, a slaughterhouse, living quarters, and gardens. And no way out. Outside the Glade is the Maze, and every day some of the kids -- the Runners -- venture into the labyrinth, trying to map the ever-changing pattern of walls in an attempt to find an exit from this hellish place. So far, no one has figured it out. And not all of the Runners return from their daily exertions, victims of the maniacal Grievers, part animal, part mechanical killing machines.
Thomas is the newest arrival to the Glade in this Truman-meets-Lord of the Flies tale. A motley crew of half a dozen kids is all he has to guide him in this strange world. As soon as he arrives, unusual things begin to happen, and the others grow suspicious of him. Though the Maze seems somehow familiar to Thomas, he's unable to make sense of the place, despite his extraordinary abilities as a Runner. What is this place, and does Thomas hold the key to finding a way out? |
"The Scorpio Races" by Maggie Stiefvater(Check out the cool animated trailer made by the author herself!)
The Scorpio Races are an annual event frequently marked by death. Every November, riders try to bury their fears as they race aboard water horses along the cliff-side. Nineteen-year-old Sean Kendrick is the returning champion, but from his sullen behavior, you would hardly know it. Young Puck Connolly, the first female entry ever, is also there to compete, but she had no intention of entering this dangerous game and now she has no idea whether she will even survive. A seductive action story. - From B&N.com "This book was beautifully written and when I finished it I couldn't stop thinking about it and it's haunting tone. There were parts that were very touching and haunting and if you like romance, action, or suspense you will like this book. The characters were so well developed I feel like they are real people and kind of wish they were! I have recommended this book to all of my friends because I simply need to talk about it more!" - Reader Review, B&N.com |

"Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay AsherTwo weeks before the events of this book, young Hannah Baker killed herself, but she left behind a sort of audio will that explained her reasons for taking her life. Each of those thirteen reasons involves cruel acts, misunderstandings, or guilty acts of omission that involve other students. Almost from the moment of its 2007 publication, Jay Asher's debut novel Thirteen Reasons Why has evoked widespread praise for its moving portrayal of the impact we have on one another's life. This international bestseller is now being made into a movie starring Selena Gomez.
